Carl Thomas Cloer, Jr. was the first faculty member at Furman University to receive both the Meritorious Teaching and Meritorious Advising Awards, and in 1988 he was named the first Professor of the Year for South Carolina. A descendant of the Cloer family of the Southern Appalachian Mountains, he brings scholarly expertise and personal connection to Cloer Ancestral Civil War Letters, preserving the intimate wartime correspondence of his ancestors.
