With his mother sick in bed, a young Edgar Jackson opened the door to the first Black doctor he had ever seen. The stately physician quickly calmed the anxiety filling the Jackson home and prescribed appropriate treatment. He also opened the door to Edgar’s lifelong calling to excel in the practice of medicine and to strive to reduce health disparities in his own and other ethnic minority communities. It would prove to be a long road, from his roots in segregated Arkansas to inner-city Cleveland, Ohio—through the discouragement of doors closed, the blessing of doors opened, and the perseverance to keep knocking on doors that others tried to shut. Along the way, he not only became a nationally recognized physician and educator but also broke down barriers to diversity in the health professions, encouraging and inspiring many others to find A Way Up and a Way Out.
