For honour. For glory. For gold.
The Year of our Lord 1427. A time of strife, superstition, and chaos.
Europe lies embroiled in a state of near-continuous warfare. In France, the Hundred Years’ War rages. Further south, the Renaissance is being born – in blood. The great city-states of Italy vie for supremacy, hiring sellswords by the thousand. For men ambitious or desperate enough, mercenary service represents an escape from soul-crushing poverty.
Robert Blackbourne and Giulio Berdini, veterans of the wars in France, Scotland and Italy, are two such men – men with a reputation for getting ugly work done. Down on their luck and on the run, the pair receive an irrefusable offer: wealth beyond their wildest dreams, or gaol. For that gold to be theirs, they must travel to France and retrieve a holy relic, tied to an ancient prophecy.
Soon, Robert and Giulio find themselves embroiled in a game far more desperate, and with stakes far more lethal, than they ever could have bargained for. The forces of evil ride abroad, and they will not stop until the relic is in their hands and every soul that stands in their way is slaughtered. Great armies are on the march once again, and as the two sellswords ride north into France on their quest, the maelstrom of war threatens to drag them into a battle which will determine the fate of a nation.
