First published in 1924, The King's Highway was used as an instruction manual for the training of native South African Anglican clergy. Concise explanations are offered for key biblical teachings, the sacraments, prayer and the Christian life—all from an High Church Anglican perspective.
Fr. Carleton writes: "I have tried to set forth in this book in simple words a statement Catholic belief and duty; not seeking to prove my statement by arguments, but only to explain the faith and to illustrate it from Holy Scripture. I have endeavored to follow the highroad of revelation and redemption which is marked out for us by the common consent of the Catholic church and the witness of scripture; disregarding the side paths and wrong roads which branch off from the highroad at every point... My hope is that it may serve as a map of the road for Anglo-Catholic wayfarers."
