Thank Goodness it's not Just Me is a collection of amusing stories and thought provoking poems triggered by our collective experience, as older women, of the challenges of living in the Twenty-First Century. Whether it's as simple as trying to walk along what used to be an empty pavement or as complex as trying to follow the directions of a Satnav that won't make its mind up, presenting alternative routes at will, we have all been there.
With few staff in sight, everyday tasks such as shopping and banking have become a minefield. Is it even possible to escape the supermarket via the self-service checkout without it grinding to a halt, loudly informing all and sundry that there is 'an unexpected item in the bagging area'? And what about using automated telephone systems to report a fault or pay for parking? When it works it's wonderful but try getting the voice recognition to understand a regional accent? "I am sorry, I didn’t understand that. Please repeat your response." If you couldn't laugh, you'd cry.
Not everything goes wrong though and, when it works, we find we can be immensely grateful to 21st Century technologies.
