This book is about what it has been like to be a schoolteacher. You remember – that person in front of the class, the one you loved or hated, who inspired you or bored you to tears, the one you took the mickey out of or feared, the one you remember as a friend, or took no notice of.
I was that person for 33 years. I taught English for 27 years at grammar schools in the days of gowns, blackboards and chalk; after that, for six at a rural comprehensive. Today I serve as leader of a literature group for the local University of the Third Age.
When I taught in schools, things were very different from now. Those were pre-Ofsted days, when there was little prescription of subject matter, methods or behaviour. The teacher in his or her classroom was truly independent, for better or for worse. Also, outside that classroom, teacher and pupils could explore a wide range of activities in ways that would be deemed too dangerous or expensive today.
Whether the education that came from those freedoms was better or worse, I am not qualified to judge. But they were good days for me and I hope you enjoy reading about them.
