Descartes argued that all bodies were just inert matter in motion, moved only by contact with other bodies, and nothing more. Jarrett A. Carty is professor and principal of the Liberal Arts College at Concordia University, Montreal. He holds a PhD from the University of Notre Dame. His specialty is the history of political thought, philosophy, and science in early modern Europe.
