Facsimile of the 1915 Sanborn fire-insurance atlas of Alton, North Alton and Upper Alton, Illinois, reproduced in full color from the Library of Congress copy. It covers the Madison County river city of 27,000 people, from the stores, banks, hotels and theatres of Second, Third and Piasa Streets on the Mississippi River out along the railroads to the Illinois Glass Company works, the mills, breweries and foundries, the schools, churches and residential streets on the bluffs, Upper Alton with Shurtleff College and the Western Military Academy, North Alton, and the outlying Laclede Steel, Alton Boxboard and Paper, Alton Brick and Armstrong lime works.
The twenty-eight numbered sheets that follow work block by block from the stores, banks and offices along Second, Third, Fourth, Belle, Piasa and State Streets - the City Hall and Police Station, the two Post Offices, the Hayner Memorial Library, the Commercial Building, the Hippodrome, Princess and Temple theatres, Turner Hall, Eagles' Hall, the Elks' and Spalding club houses, the Y. M. C. A., the Telegraph and Times printing offices, the fire stations and the Illini, Lincoln, Madison, Mineral Springs, Dawson, European, Gum, New Home and Savoy hotels - through the Union Depot, the Chicago and Alton, Chicago, Peoria and St. Louis and Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis depots and round houses, the Illinois Terminal general offices and round house, the Missouri and Illinois Bridge and Belt offices, the Illinois Glass Company bottle works, the Standard-Tilton and Sparks flour mills, the Beall Bros. miners' pick and shovel works, the Luer Bros. packing and ice plant, the Bluff City and Reck breweries, the Ducan and Schuessler foundries, the Brokaw-Eden washing-machine works, the Gratian pipe-organ factory, the Hapgood Plow works, the St. Louis Yacht and Boat Company, the Alton Steam Cooperage, the lumber yards and planing mills, the Alton Gas and Electric and East St. Louis Light and Power plants and the Alton Water Company works, the Laclede Steel Company's Alton Works, the Alton Boxboard and Paper Company, the Alton Brick Company and the Armstrong Lime and Quarry works, to St. Joseph's Hospital, the Alton Woman's Home, the Nazareth Home for the Aged, the Catholic Orphanage, Shurtleff College, the Western Military Academy, the Ursuline Academy, the Alton High School and the public schools, St. Peter and St. Paul's, St. Mary's and St. Patrick's Catholic churches, the Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterian, Episcopal, Congregational, Unitarian, Evangelical and A. M. E. churches, North Alton Park, and the residential streets of the bluffs, Upper Alton and North Alton.
In December 1915 the Sanborn Map Company of New York surveyed Alton, North Alton and Upper Alton for the fire-insurance trade, drawing them at fifty feet to the inch and the Illinois Glass Company works at one hundred feet to the inch. Every building is shown to scale and color-coded for construction (yellow for frame, pink for brick, blue for stone), with heights, uses, windows, party walls, hydrants, water mains and fire stations all marked. The index lists every street and every named business, church, school, hotel, mill and works with the sheet it appears on, and the key map places the colored sheet grid over the whole city.
This Exile Books edition is an unabridged facsimile republication of the atlas: all twenty-nine numbered map sheets, 1 to 29, sheet 1 being the combined title, key map and index sheet with its report on the water works and fire department, the others covering the city from the business district on the Mississippi River to the glass works, mills and railroad yards, Upper Alton with Shurtleff College and the Western Military Academy, North Alton, and the outlying brick, lime, steel and paper works, printed at 8.5 x 11 inches on premium color paper.

The Sanborn Map Company of New York, founded by D. A. Sanborn in 1867 and by the 1900s headquartered at 11 Broadway, surveyed thousands of American cities for the fire-insurance trade. Its large-scale plans record every building's footprint, construction, height and use, and remain the most detailed record of the early twentieth-century American city.
