Described as “Unflinching, sweeping and stunningly intimate,” the stories in Khem K. Aryal’s new collection introduce readers to a group of Nepalese immigrants to the United States and the often difficult cultural negotiations that define their lives. After years of being told immigration was the ultimate dream, arriving to America in the midst of their new country’s culture wars, where immigrants are often political pawns, tarnishes the experience and leaves many wondering what they have done. In “Laxman Sir in America” a family man mourns his loss of identity; he was a teacher in Nepal, where he dressed well and was deserving of honorifics. Now he is a nearly anonymous worker at an Amazon fulfillment warehouse and slowly growing estranged from his family who are having an easier time adjusting. In “Mrs. Sharma’s Halloween” a woman visits her children and grandchildren at their new house in America and feels the dream of them returning to Nepal to take care of her in her old age slipping away. And in “Shopping for Glasses” a man is frustrated in his attempt to buy new glasses, something he’s been told he needs to counteract chronic headaches. He simply cannot decide which pair to buy and pines for the kind of individual service he used to receive in Nepal. In stories that deftly show the heartrending ambivalence of not being part of a new culture yet being unable to return to the old, Aryal’s The In-Betweeners paints a compelling portrait of the price we have to pay in pursuit of our dreams.
