American Culture 2.0 is an interdisciplinary work that identifies a collection of perspectives and practices that enable human flourishing—and explores how they can be improved over time. Just as computer software determines how a computer performs, culture determines how individuals, families, organizations, and nations perform. Healthy cultural packages elevate people’s lives. Flawed ones undermine them.
Drawing on more than four decades of study, reading, travel, business leadership, and teaching, the author’s research and experience spans history, religion, philosophy, science, psychology, education, economics, business, and government. The result is a remarkably integrated framework that explains not only how individuals succeed but also how families, schools, businesses, governments, and entire civilizations flourish. Individuals can do everything right, but if these other levels of human organization fail them, they can still have difficult lives.
Rather than beginning with politics or ideology, the authors search for understanding and answers begins with reality. Thus, the opening chapters examine the evolution of the universe, life, and culture and how they have shaped our existence and nature. The author suggests that humans possess two operating systems. The first is instinctual, inherited through biological evolution over millions of years. It predisposes us toward emotional reactions, pleasure, immediate gratification, and groupthink. This system served our hunter-gatherer ancestors well but often is counterproductive today. The second is our acquired operating system—the perspectives and practices we learn from our parents, teachers, schools, and society. Recognizing this mismatch between our ancient instincts and the requisites of modern life is essential to understanding individual behavior and the resolution of the challenges facing modern democracies.
One of the most thought-provoking discussions concerns the dramatic changes in the way we transmit culture today. Previous generations acquired much of their understanding of life from parents, grandparents, teachers, neighbors, local communities, and respected leaders. Modern technology has transformed this process. Television, social media, and digital communication now occupy many of the hours once devoted to family conversation, independent reading, outdoor activity, work, and community life. Technology is not inherently harmful, rather, the concern lies in the incentives these platforms create, the role models they present, and the behaviors they normalize. Every generation must decide intentionally what kinds of cultural influences deserve imitation.
Flourishing therefore depends upon frequently overriding our instinctual inclinations and employing executive function. Civilization advances when our culture helps us moderate instinct, develop executive function, pursue long-term goals, live cooperatively, and contribute to the common good. Thus, the central challenge to every society is identifying, agreeing on, and transmitting to each generation a competitive cultural package that furthers fitness, well-being, and adaptation.
The book's distinctive contribution lies in its unusual understanding of our context and nature, and its holistic approaches to life. Rather than offering isolated recommendations, the book demonstrates that human flourishing emerges when accurate perspectives and a potent collection of practices reinforce one another across every level of society—from individuals, families, and groups to education, business, government, and national culture. For readers willing to think deeply, examine assumptions, and pursue lives of purpose, American Culture 2.0 offers not merely a diagnosis of contemporary challenges but a comprehensive roadmap toward a freer, juster, and more prosperous future.

American Culture 2.0 delves into our country's biggest challenges, takes you beyond the narrow, self-serving thinking of the right and left, and presents creative and practical resolutions. I appreciate the author's opposition to injustice and rejections of our rationalization of poor choices.
