READ THE WINNER OF 8 BOOK AWARDS, INCLUDING the INDEPENDENT AUTHOR NETWORK (IAN) AWARD IN HEALTH/MEDICINE AND THE NATIONAL INDIE EXCELLENCE AWARD IN CANCER "A thrilling synopsis of the current condition of the fight against cancer... remarkably lucid...A marvelous book that's packed with knowledge, insight, and hope."- Kirkus Reviews "Kelner proves a welcoming guide whose optimism is infectious."- Booklife by Publisher's Weekly "Kelner's writing shines in its ability to distill complex scientific concepts into accessible language...The book offers insightful analysis, interesting history, and hope, making it a valuable addition to the stores of science communication."- Reedsy Discovery TAMING CANCER IS THE CANCER BOOK FOR THE 21ST CENTURY-AND BEYOND! Step inside the revolution in cancer medicine with Dr. Drew N. Kelner, Ph.D., a biochemist, cancer drug developer, and former scientific leader at the biopharmaceutical company Amgen, and learn how over a century of groundbreaking discoveries in the biomedical sciences have ripped the lid off of cancer's black box of molecular secrets, revealing how tumors corrupt our biology to evade immunity and resist every therapeutic intervention we devise. Through vivid storytelling, readers meet the innovators behind "living drugs"- medicines made in biological systems- such as engineered T cells (CAR-T cells), oncolytic viruses, and other seemingly magical medicines. These ingenious drugs arrest tumor progression and metastasis, turning the tables on tumors by using- in reverse-the same molecular tricks that cancer cells use to support their path of cellular destruction. For some patients, these emerging "wonder drugs" are providing long-term remissions measured in years, and for the most fortunate patients, even decades of remission have already been achieved. These are the most exciting times in our long battle against "The Emperor of All Maladies": a shift is underway in the paradigm of cancer treatment from toxic substances (e.g., chemotherapy and radiation) that destroy both tumors and bystander normal cells, to therapies that target the biological weaknesses of cancer cells that have been revealed through decades of cancer research. As headlines buzz with new cancer therapies and clinical trial breakthroughs, Taming Cancer presents a compelling and hopeful vision of a future when cancer will be managed as a chronic disease, much like rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes. For the most responsive patients, the eradication of cancer cells from the body-the long-sought cure for metastatic cancer-will become a reality for increasing numbers of patients. Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor

For the past 35 years, I've been a biochemist and immunologist engaged in the development of biopharmaceutical drugs-proteins (such as antibodies), engineered immune cells, and even engineered viruses (it's in Chapter 14)-that target human diseases at the molecular level. During my career, I've had the great privilege of participating in the development of innovative medicines for cancer, hemophilia, anemia, osteoporosis, and rheumatoid arthritis that have been used by millions of people around the world. I was born and raised on Long Island and left home to pursue a B.S. in chemistry from Haverford College and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Duke University. I am currently the President of Shenandoah Biotechnology Consulting, LLC, in Charlottesville, VA, where I reside with my beloved wife Deb. This book is the product of a long and exhilarating career in the scientific trenches of the biopharmaceutical industry and a seemingly natural consequence of my lifelong preoccupation: biology and medicine. I wrote Taming Cancer to pay forward the privilege I had of working at the leading edge of cancer drug development and to send a message of hope to cancer patients and their families throughout the world.
