Inhaltsangabe

We expect bad things to happen in ugly places, not beautiful places like Ithaca, a city nestled in the hills of Central New York at the foot of Cayuga Lake, a city surrounded by picturesque waterfalls, a city tainted by kidnapping, rape, and murder in the autumn of 1985.

This whodunit pits small town lawyer Andy Lee, a hard-working, unassuming, middle-aged man devoted to his wife and justice, against career criminals. He is aided by his wisecracking wife, Mel, and his friend, Rick, a private investigator with political correctness issues. The banter between Andy and his wife is reminiscent of the repartee between the old-time sleuths Nick and Nora Charles.

The book opens with the kidnapping of teenager Sara Jennings and the murder of Mrs. Sheila Eams. When her husband Arthur is arrested for her murder, he hires Andy to represent him. When career criminal Ronnie Dean is arrested for Sara’s kidnapping and rape, the court appoints Andy to defend him.

Andy doggedly pursues the truth in spite of all the lies he's been told. And as he gets closer to the truth, there is another murder and more threats, upping the pressure on him to solve the cases. Follow his search for the underlying evil seeking revenge.
