Steven Kelly is a performance improvement consultant and writer with more than four decades of experience helping organizations deliver measurable results under real-world constraints. A former Army intelligence officer and nuclear-industry training manager, he later co-founded KNO Worldwide. A boutique assessment and capacity-building firm, KNO worked across post-communist Europe, Central Asia, and other transitioning regions. Steven has advised government ministries, multinationals, and nonprofits on turning intent into sustainable performance.
M. Mari Novak is an organizational systems practitioner with a background in urban and regional planning. After early work spanning the Peace Corps and executive roles in both nonprofit and private-sector settings, she co-founded KNO Worldwide with Steven Kelly. Known for balancing analytical rigor with deep attention to human dynamics, and translating complex change into practical action, she has helped lead reform efforts in transitioning societies worldwide.

Hardcover. Zustand: new. Hardcover. Change is never just a plan. It's trust, trade-offs, and consequences.Steven Kelly and Mari Novak take you inside the real work of reform - where intent collides with culture, power, and politics. Over four decades, they worked alongside ministries learning democracy, organizations rebuilding after communism, and developmental programs fighting bureaucracy and inertia - often under-resourced, under pressure, and rarely controlling the forces at play.Told with candor, wit, and hard-earned humility, these stories reveal what never makes it into policy: - why "best practices" fail when incentives don't change- how culture and power shape possibility- how unintended consequences disrupt systems- what helps when rules keep shiftingIf you've ever tried to fix a broken organization, lead change, or make a difference in a complex world, this memoir will sharpen how you see the work - and raise your appreciation of what it demands.
