A man with a rifle opens fire on people who cannot fight back. Almost everyone runs. That is the sane response, the one almost anyone would make.
A few run toward the gunfire.
Chuck Rylant spent a career among the few who do. Patrol officer, detective, SWAT, and the years since as a court-qualified expert in more than 300 cases. He has interviewed men who killed in the line of duty and world champion fighters who came up out of nothing. He wanted to know what separates the rare person who moves toward danger from everyone else who, reasonably, does not.
What he found is not what the folklore says.
It is not the uniform. Hallways full of trained, armed officers have waited while others, with no badge and no duty, went in. It is not the sheepdog story told at retirement dinners. It is not courage as the word is usually used, and it is not the absence of fear. The men who move report the same pounding heart as the men who freeze. What they share is stranger and simpler. They had already decided, often years before, what they would and would not accept. The moment did not produce the decision. It revealed one already made.
Already Decided traces where that decision comes from. Through Spartan training grounds and Viking sagas. Through the FBI's interviews with men who killed police officers. Through a jiu-jitsu academy that turned fatherless boys into coaches, and a night on a foreign street when the smarter man said comply and the author could not.
It shows what the capacity costs the people who carry it. And it asks the harder question. The same raw material that builds the man who runs toward gunfire might also build the man who opens fires on the crowd. What decides the direction is not character, and it is not fixed. It is closer to who was standing next to him when it mattered.
Rylant sorts every claim into established research, testimony, or argued conviction, and gives the counterevidence a seat at the table.
About the author: Chuck J. Rylant, Psy.D., is a court-qualified expert witness in use of force and human factors, and the author of The Reasonableness Standard and Shots Fired.
