Family Is the Recipe is the story of five generations of one family, told through food, restaurants, immigration, Fisherman’s Wharf, and the recipes that changed along the way.
Michael Sabella grew up in a San Francisco restaurant family whose roots reach back to fishermen in Sciacca, Sicily. From his great-grandfather Luciano crossing an ocean in search of opportunity, to generations of Sabellas building lives around seafood, family tables, and Fisherman’s Wharf, food was never just something they cooked. It was how the family worked, celebrated, survived, argued, remembered, and stayed connected.
Michael was raised in that world. He learned the restaurant business from the ground up, worked alongside relatives and employees from many different cultures, became a chef and restaurant owner, and eventually built a career that stretched far beyond the Wharf. Along the way came fires, family businesses, famous customers, culinary school, West Portal, Sysco, teaching, military foodservice, five children, ten grandchildren—and more than a few stories that probably could only happen in a restaurant family.
The recipes are woven into the story because that is where they belong. Some came from Sicily. Others changed as ingredients, neighborhoods, cultures, and generations changed. The fifth generation adds Persian, Nicaraguan-American, Southern, Mexican, Irish, Italian, and other influences to the family table.
Filled with family photographs, restaurant history, recipes, humor, and memories, Family Is the Recipe is not simply a cookbook or a memoir. It is a look at what happens when traditions are handed down for more than a century—and every generation decides to change them just a little.
Because recipes change.
Family doesn’t.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - Family Is the Recipe: Five Generations of Food, Family, and Fisherman's Wharf is part memoir, part family history, and part cookbook-the story of how one Sicilian-American family carried its traditions from the fishing communities of Sicily to San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf and into five generations of kitchens.Michael Sabella grew up inside the family restaurant business, learning about seafood, cooking, customers, and life long before he ever called himself a chef. His family's story begins with Sicilian fishermen who came to San Francisco in the late nineteenth century and follows the growth of A. Sabella's on Fisherman's Wharf, from fish market and crab stand to a landmark restaurant known to generations of locals, tourists, entertainers, athletes, and politicians. But this is not simply the history of a restaurant. It is the story of parents, grandparents, children, grandchildren, marriages, Sunday meals, Christmas tables, family arguments, old jokes, hard work, and recipes that changed every time the world around them changed. Michael writes about learning from his father and Nana Angelina, growing up on the Wharf, becoming the family chef, raising five children with his wife Dede, leaving the restaurant business, and eventually finding a new chapter teaching and working with cooks in the United States Air Force.Recipes are woven throughout the story rather than collected separately. Some came directly from the family kitchen. Others were reconstructed from memory, old notes, restaurant menus, and dishes that were cooked for decades without anyone ever bothering to write them down. Traditional Sicilian dishes sit beside Fisherman's Wharf seafood, restaurant classics, and modern recipes created by the next generation.Filled with family photographs, restaurant history, humor, recipes, and stories that could only come from someone who lived them, Family Is the Recipe is ultimately about what survives when everything else changes.Restaurants close. Recipes evolve. Children grow up. Kitchens get newer. But somebody is still cooking. Somebody is still saying, 'Taste this.'And everybody eventually ends up back at the table.
