You earned the title. You prepared for the role. And then you stepped into leadership and realized something important was missing.
No one taught you how to lead through broken trust, unspoken expectations, emotional fatigue, or resistance that feels personal. No one handed you a plan for navigating culture, connection, and complexity when the answers are not clear, and the stakes are high.
Unwritten exists to close that gap.
This is not a checklist or a theory book. It is a deeply practical, human-centered guide for school and district leaders who want to lead with clarity, courage, and presence in real systems with real people.
Drawing from lived experience as a superintendent and principal, Melanie Matta walks leaders through the work that credential programs rarely teach:
At the core of the book is The Innovative Leader’s 90-Day Entry Plan, a field-tested framework designed to help leaders slow down, listen deeply, build credibility, and design intentionally rather than reactively. You can find the plan at www.edleadershiplab.com/store.
Whether you are stepping into leadership for the first time, entering a new campus or district, or carrying the weight of rebuilding after years of instability, this book meets you where you are.
Leadership does not begin with strategy.
It begins with how you show up.
Unwritten is for leaders ready to do the real work. The human work.
The work that lasts.

Melanie Matta is a Superintendent/Principal, leadership practitioner, and founder of EdLeadership Lab with more than two decades of experience serving in small and rural school communities as a teacher, coach, principal, and district leader. Known for her human-centered approach, she focuses on building trust, strengthening systems, and supporting leaders as they step into roles that rarely come with a roadmap. She mentors emerging leaders, public speaker on practical leadership, and is pursuing her doctorate in Educational Leadership with a focus on leadership transitions and superintendent retention in rural districts. Unwritten: The Leadership Entry Plan No One Gave You-Until Now is rooted in the real moments she has lived and witnessed, grounded in her belief that leadership is human work and that the first months in a new role can shape everything that follows.
