A bit of soiling and wear to upper edge of a few leaves, folding map foxed. Very good. First edition of this detailed report on British Honduras. Captain Henderson describes the flora and fauna of the island as well as the history of British settlement and the current status of slavery in the colony, including the treatment of enslaved workers, their cost, provisioning, daily lives, and the laws for manumission. A short section is devoted to "Sketches of the Manners and Customs of the Mosquito Indians," including a three-page vocabulary table. The rest of the text treats the history of the British settlements there (established to harvest mahogany wood) and the natural history of the region. The folding map depicts British Honduras and the Yucatan peninsula in detail, with gold and silver mines marked in addition to towns (including several labeled "Indian Town"). George Henderson was an army officer in Caribbean service, whose interest in the conditions of slavery were evidenced once more by a treatise published in 1816 on the condition and treatment of Black slaves in the British colonies.
