Simone Weil's life was marked by a radical moral imperative. Born in Paris in 1909 to a cultured, agnostic Jewish family, she displayed exceptional intelligence and a profound interest in philosophy and social justice from an early age. She studied at the É cole Normale SupÉ rieure, where she was a student of Alain. Later, she worked as a factory worker to experience suffering firsthand. In Gravity and Grace, a posthumous work compiled from her notebooks, Weil reflected on the weight of necessity and the possibility of the supernatural. In it, she explored love as dispossession, not as a possessive feeling but as an act of pure attention to others. She also described friendship as a form of grace— a silent, undemanding bond founded on respect and truth. During World War II, she joined the Free French in London but rejected privileges, choosing to live in extreme austerity. Weakened by tuberculosis and the voluntary fasting she imposed on herself as an act of solidarity with her occupied country, she died in 1943.
