Dark Brown Cloth boards with black blocked title slips and gilt titles, 280 x 215 mm approx. Vol I [vi] + 576 pp Vol II xii + pp 577 -1302 Vol I title dated 1882. NB The two vols were not published contemporaneously the preface to Vol II stating there was an interval of 15 years between the writing of Parts I & II and the appearance of Parts III -IV. There is no title page to Vol II - but no evidence from the binding that this has been lost or removed and we therefore believe the volume to be as published. No doubt greater minds than ours will correct if that not be the case. The set offered is from the library of Adolphus William Ward Master of Peterhouse Cambridge with his book plate to the front paste down of both vols. Vol I has a very discreet inscription to the preliminary blank a.w.ward with kindest regards t n t. Please see our images of the actual set offered for sale for further details and condition. VG (books - shelf wear to cloth commensurate with age, mild shelf soiling. Book plates as above with latter - daughter and son in law's book plates - Cynthia and John Barnes to free end papers.
