I, ix + [i] + 342 pp.; II, viii + 326 pp. I bound in red cloth, gilt, spine sunned; II, bound in black cloth, gilt, in price clipped dust wrapper, top edge red, with traces of foxing and a few small stains. Both vols. a little wear to extremities, but otherwise very good copies. Illustrated by 9 pages of black and white plates, including frontispiece. The first two volumes of the Autobiography of John Lehmann (1907-87), poet, man of letters and publisher. He edited New Writing, 1936-40, which continued as Penguin New Writing until 1950 and featured many leading writers of the day, including Auden, Isherwood, Orwell, Spender and Wintringham. He founded and edited The London magazine, 1954-61, joined Leonard and Virginia Woolf at the Hogarth Press, 1938-46 and subsequently set up his own company, John Lehmann Limited, 1946-53, which published the first two books of Elizabeth David.
