Beschreibung

Baddeck, Nova Scotia: June 25, 1913. 1913. Very good. - Letter filling 3 sides of a sheet of cream letterhead folded to form 4 sides, each 6-1/2 inches high by 5 inches wide. The letterhead is personalized with Kennan's raised initials on the first side at top left. Signed "George Kennan". The date answered is stamped in purple ink at top right of the first side. A note of sums owed is penned on one side of a single sheet of the same paper and is signed by Kennan. The letter and enclosure are both folded once for mailing. Together with the mailing envelope addressed to "J. B. Pond Lyceum Bureau" in New York City. The envelope is soiled. The letter and enclosure are in very good condition. Also with a 4-page brochure about Kennan's life and travels with his portrait on the first page. The brochure is a bit fragile with some light creasing to the brochure & several short tears to its edges. A friendly letter, despite the fact that Kennan has not been paid most of the money he is owed: "I shall not press you on the note. I know that you will make payments when you can". With regard to the brochure, he writes: "I have lots of old printed matter relating to my lectures, but it will be well perhaps to get out a new leaflet with subjects, statement of my experience in the Far East &c." He mentions that since his return from Japan he has been busy contributing articles and stories to various publications." Kennan is writing from his summer home in Baddeck, Cape Breton.George Kennan [1845-1924] was an American explorer and author noted for his travels in the Kamchatka and Caucasus regions of the Russian Empire. Kennan had been interested in travel from a very young age and in 1864 he obtained employment with the Russian-American Telegraph Company to survey a route for a proposed overland telegraph line through Siberia and across the Bering Strait. Having spent two years in the wilds of Kamchatka, he returned to his home in Ohio via Saint Petersburg. After these experiences he soon became well known for his lectures, articles and books about his travels. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 34161
