Travel description and commentary on the social/economic situation in France while on his way to Greece, just prior to being elected President of Harvard University. "I arrived here this morning, having left Paris at 11 o'clock yesterday, by railway. Of course [ ] and did not stop at any of the [ ] places. The weather was [ ] though we had rain [ ]the time during my two days in Paris. I must confess that Paris seems to me the most agreeable city, so far as the means of enjoyment or entertainment go, although at the present moment it appears more splendid and delightful than ever. Yet you see signs of a threatening character, and hear worrying voices [ ] of a [ ]. The public debt here has more than doubled since the Emperor ascended the throne. Soldiers are marching and centurion [ ] and arms are moving from place to place. Orders have been given - to [ ] the estates devised for charitable use. [ ] financed in the public sentiments - a [ ] are arbitrary, but cunning measure. Add to this an ill concealed hatred for England, and an eager [ ] for war, or the part of the [ ] feelings heartily reciprocated by the English: - and it [ ] appears that a [ ] crisis cannot long be averted. War, revolution and a [ ] seem hovering over this lovely country [ ] France new [ ] so lovely at this moment. The delicate? valleys, the [ ] covered with the growing vines, the soft sunshine, the rich verdure, [ ] as I have never before given in France, the admirable and admirably conducted railroads [ ] France more agreeable to the stranger than it was when I was here before. There was a grand [ ] at Fontainebleau when we passed through yesterday: [ ] to stop and see it though kings and queens were there by the dozen - One of my fellow passengers came with me from Paris and sails for Italy at the same time [ ] I sail for Greece. We have spent today very pleasantly in [ ] Marseilles [ ] and in climbing up a hill that overlooked the city and the Mediterranean a splendid view. On the top they are building a church c Notre Dame de les Garde. It will be one of the most beautifully placed churches in Europe. Our [ ] with when we spent an hour, is a very intelligent and obliging gentleman. He gave us [most?] information about the city and was in all respects candid and [genuine?] though [ Mr. Rand.?] myself how any letter to him or ever acquainted with him. - I [ ] old English [accent?] [ ]. [Mr. Mayep?], who has a son in the United States: [ ] he is in England [ ] I saw his wife and handsome daughter. In general, I think [ ] is a about a few [ ] I am [ ] fatigued today, [ ] last night's travel, than I should have been, a few years ago.
