Single leaf, pale blue lined paper. Signatures of Hannibal Hamlin and John Noble Goodwin. Old glue remnants on blank verso, Very Good. Hannibal Hamlin of Maine was Lincoln's first Vice President. John Noble Goodwin [1824-1887] was a lawyer, chief justice, governor, and American politician from Maine. He graduated Dartmouth College in 1844, studied law, and was admitted to the Maine bar in 1848. He was a member of the Maine State Senate in 1854; Republican delegate from Maine to the 37th Congress of the U.S. House of Representatives [March 4, 1861-March 3, 1863]; moved to Arizona and was appointed Chief Justice of the Arizona Territory on August 21, 1863; first governor of the Arizona Territory from 1863-1866; and a Republican delegate from Arizona to the 39th Congress of the U.S. House of Representatives [March 4, 1865- March 3, 1867]. [Biographical Directory of the United States Congress 1774 - Present, accessed at bioguide.congress.gov, October 2025.] Frederick A. Somes [1846-1863] died unexpectedly on January 13, 1863. His lengthy obituary shows the young man made quite an impression in his short life. He had "the intelligence and integrity of ripened manhood" and "with the simplicity and innocence of boyhood, he had the intelligent judgment and stern principle of mature years." Somes "for several months had been one of the delivery clerks at the city post office, and by his attention and pleasant manners had won a large circle of acquaintances and friends, and had so commended himself, as one capable and worthy, that the Congressional delegation of Maine, with Vice President Hamlin and other influential friends, had sought an appointment for him at one of the departments, and his appointment to a lucrative and trusty clerkship was made on the very day of his death."
