B00474KU82 1804 first edition thus, 'Printed and Sold by Wm. Phillips' (London), 3 1/2 x 5 1/4 inches tall full tree calf leather bound, gilt ruling and gilt-lettered red leather label to spine, iii, [11], 246, [2] pp. Association copy: On the blank front free-endpaper, a gift inscription to Lady Byron (1792-1860), the wife of poet George Gordon Byron, more commonly known as Lord Byron, from 'P. Gurney,' quite likely Priscilla Hannah Gurney (1757-1828), a noted Quaker minister and writer. Light to moderate rubbing and edgewear to covers, with bumping to all four tips. Cracking along front exterior hinge, but the binding is quite solid. On the front pastedown, the bookplate of New Zealand book collector Pat Lawlor, known for his extensive collection of editions of The Imitation of Christ and other works by Thomas a Kempis. Old auction record for the book tipped onto the lower margin of the blank front free-endpaper. Otherwise, a very good copy - clean, bright and unmarked - of this rare abridged Quaker edition of one of the most popular Christian devotional works of all time. COPAC locates only one copy, the the Society of Friends Library in London; OCLC (No. 78815969) locates three other copies - at The British Library, St. Pancras, in London; at Harvard; and at the University of California, Davis. ~KM5~ [1.0P] A rare edition of the Christian devotional work The Imitation of Christ, abridged by Quaker writer John Kendall (1726-1815). Kendall, raised in Colchester, in southeast England, is best remembered for his authorship of an 'Abstract of the Bible' (2 vols. 1800) which was at one time largely used in the families and schools of the Society of Friends and others. The Imitation of Christ was written in Latin by Catholic monk Thomas Kempis (circa 1380-1471), as four separate books completed between 1420 and 1427, at Mount Saint Agnes monastery, in the town of Windesheim, located in what is now the Netherlands. He wrote these works for the instruction of novices of his Augustinian monastic order, followers of Geert Groote's Brethren of the Common Life. But the writings quickly became popular among all the literate faithful. There is probably no other book apart from the Bible which has been printed in so many editions and translations.
