Scotsmen Thomas Muir, an advocate, and Joseph Gerrald, a political activist, were ardent supporters of the American and French Revolutions and a proponent of comprehensive parliamentary reform in Great Britain. Both men were involved with the London Corresponding Society, which was targeted alongside other groups during a wave of prosecutions by Pitt's government after the French Revolution. In 1793, five men were tried for sedition in highly politicized proceedings, among them Muir and Gerrald. The trials predictably resulted in guilty verdicts. Muir and Gerrald were both sentenced to fourteen years' transportation to the Australian penal colony of Botany Bay. Gerrald died there in 1796; Muir managed to escape, but his health was ruined as a result and he died in 1798. The five activists tried between 1793 and 179.
