Beschreibung
A charming illustrated copy of George Eliot's novel 'Adam Bede'. A charming illustrated version of George Eliot's 'Adam Bede'. Following the story of a collection of character in the rural community of Hayslope, 'Adam Bede' is the first published novel by Eliot. Mary Ann Evans, or George Eliot, was born in 1819, and was a leading writer in the Victorian era. Already a successful editor and critic, used a pen name allowed Eliot's work to been judged fairly, as well as escaping the stereotypes surrounding female writer of the time. 'Adam Bede' was her first novel, and it was met with instant success. Within a year she had moved on to writing another of her successful novels 'The Mill on the Floss'. She herself lived a fascinating life, engaging in a love affair with the married George Henry Lewes, and later after his death, sparking scandal again by marrying a man 20 years her junior. Illustrated throughout by the talented Gordon Browne, renowned artist and children's book illustrator. Collated complete. In cloth binding. Externally, smart. Slight bumping to the head and tail of the spine, with some slight rubbing to the gilt detailing on the spine, and to the joints and extremities. Small mark to the front board towards the head. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean. The frontispiece, has been clipped, with a small amount of loss to the head of the page, not affecting the illustration. Very Good.
