Tipped-in works representative of 19th-century Prussian/German society, whether a colorful glittering ballroom or stark B&W outdoor scene. AM has been characterized by critics as a brilliant historical painter, sensitive to the treatment of light in his works. Boards have darkened with age, front cover has "Adolph Menzel" in dark red, other lettering in black with nature design surrounding same and on spine; reverse has smaller variation of cover design. Endpapers have similar design in very light green. Pages 5-8 of Introduction pulling away from gutter. Paper edges have a few chips, spots but prints are in near fine condition.
