Buchbeschreibung New York: Charles L. Webster and Company, 1885, 1885. FIRST EDITION, earliest state of the cloth issue, now finely rebound in full green morocco, with the original cloth covers preserved at rear. Large octavo, pp.366. Illustrated throughout. Binding features gilt titles, and raised bands to spine, inner gilt dentelle, top edge gilt, black endpapers. Internally clean save for the very occasional thumbmark. A fine copy of a rare printing. With the following issue points confirming this as one of the initial cloth copies: p.9; (Ch.VI of Contents) 'Huck Decided' for 'Huck Decides'. p.13: the illustration captioned 'Him and another Man' is listed, incorrectly, as at p.88; p.57: the eleventh line from the bottom reads 'with the was' not 'with the saw' p.161: lacks the signature mark 11 at the bottom of the page. In addition, the portrait frontispiece has the tablecloth, or scarf, clearly visible. The contentious 'bulging fly' plate (p.283) was only included in publisher's leather and is therefore not pertinent to cloth copies. Blanck . BMC No261, p90-93. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 48050
Buchbeschreibung New York, NY: Charles L. Webster and Company, 1885, 1885. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE (with all points required for the earliest cloth-covered editions). Octavo, pp. 366. Elegantly bound in full dark green morocco leather, raised bands with gilt titles to spine, all edges gilt, marbled end papers with inner gilt dentelle. Frontispiece and portrait of Twain bust with tissue guard at front of text, original cloth cover and spine bound in at end. Numerous black and white illustrations throughout. Light spotting to prelims, otherwise textblock is clean. A fine copy in an attractive recent leather binding, which has McBride's three essential points for a first issue: page 9 - "decided" not "decides", page 13 - "Him and another man" listed at page 88 and page 57 11th line from the bottom - "with the was". Additional points according to Blank - title page is second state, (a cancel); state 1 is unknown and noted only in the prospectus. Illustration at page 283 (Silas Phelps fly) is third state (a cancel); first state only occurs in the sheepskin issue, second state only exists as an excised leaf in a prospectus and set of advanced sheets. Page 155 - the last "5" is larger; Blanck makes no statement whether this or with the final "5" lacking is the first or second state. This copy has the final blank and the portrait is first state with the scarf visible and the Heliotype Company imprint. A fine copy, attractively bound. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 39265
