Beschreibung

B06ZYTKGXF 1993 first edition, Department of Transportation, U.S. Coast Guard (Washington, D.C.), 7 x 9 1/4 inches tall stapled paperbound, illustrated with black-and-white photographs, 50 pp. Slight soiling, rubbing and edgewear to covers. Otherwise, a very good copy - clean, bright and unmarked - of this scarce history. OCLC (No. 51629153) has a listing, but locates no copies at institutions worldwide. ~WWW~ Shares the stories of some some African American Coast Guardsmen role models from 1790 through 1993. These mariners include Captain Michael Healy, commanding officer of the Revenue cutter BEAR, who was instrumental in providing food and clothing for Alaskan natives; Richard Etheridge, Keeper of Coast Guard Station Pea Island (North Carolina) of the Life-Saving Service; Charles W. David, Jr., messman aboard a Coast Guard cutter operating in World War II, who sacrificed his life in the waters of the North Atlantic while rescuing crew members of a torpedoed transport vessel; and Alex Haley, author of the Pulitzer-Prize winning novels Roots and The Autobiography of Malcolm X, who began his Coast Guard career as a steward and retired from the Coast Guard as a photo journalist.
