The undertaking was commissioned by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation (BMZ) and. the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Forestry (BML). It was jointly planned in cooperation with the German Council for Tropical and Subtropical Agricultural Research (ATSAF). The purpose of this type of venture is obvious for all who require information and communication. It concerns the scientists as well as those responsible for planning, management and financing of research in addition to technical and scientific cooperation. May this directory assist these scientists in their search for cooperation and their interdisciplinary efforts. For management and public administration it is designed to assist in the realization of project-based research and in the search for cooperation partners wherever research is in demand. Lastly, this compilation also aims to represent the achievements of German agricultural research in a form which was recently not available to the pub 1 i c to th i s extent, and wh i ch presents vi ta 1 arguments for research financing. Thus considered, the scientists collaborating on this work have provided a valuable service for themselves and their research undertakings. I express my sincere gratitude for the cooperation of the great number of scientists who have participated in answering the questionnaire. The publication may present some gaps in breadth and content, but it provides nontheless a detailed summary of the field. It is not possible to assess the extent to which it has been successful in representing agricultural research directed to the tropics, since it must be assumed that despite the intensive efforts not all institutions .
