Henry Altemus Company. Philadelphia. 1897 (circa 1907-1908) 183 numbered pages with 16 pages of adds in the rear of book. Altemus' Young People's Library Series No. 2, format 3 with flower design on backstrip. Original DJ with 50 cents price on rear for books in the series. Books in the series are listed up to number 58 on rear of DJ. Book title for book number 31 of the series was removed from the DJ by Altemus. They took this title off the DJ in 1907. Couple all of this with a dated 1908 gift inscription on the FFEP and it seems most likely that this edition is from 1907-1908 despite the leftover copyright date of 1897. As for the book, it has 4 color plates and 38 black and white illustrations by John Tenniel. Illustrated boards. Book is tight. Binding and hinges are strong. Pages lay flat and undisturbed; seemingly unread. Endpapers are clean. Only flaw keeping the book from grading fine is toned endpapers from the old DJ flaps acidity (now DJ is protected in removable mylar acid-free protector) and a vintage gift inscription from "Mamma" dated 1908. Aside from the incredible condition of the book and the beautiful craftsmanship by Altemus, the DJ is the true plum! The DJ has an open chip at the foot of the spine. There are a couple of very small chips along folds. In all, this is a beautiful, unread copy in an uncommon and difficult to find DJ. A most desirable early copy of the classic!.
