T. Buckingham, for Thomas & Andrews, Boston, 1805, Volume One Only, three maps, 864 pp, full original leather, 9 x 5.5 , 8vo. In fair condition. Moderate wear to extremities with scuffing to surface of leather. Boars are worn with crushing to corners. Spine abraded and worn. Old hand ownership and previous bookseller s notes on fly leaf. Old remnant of wax on the pastedown. Frontis map torn in half. Missing left segment. Title page torn and mostly missing. Map of North America is torn and missing left segment. Map of South America complete and lightly torn. Interior is typically toned with minor instances of foxing and age stain. Rear end papers have old hand ownership of Roger Haskeu of Weathersfield, Vermont. Later ownership of his located in Rochester, NY in 1837. Grid work for plans of a house? On rear end papers as well. A matched set: volume one is a fifth edition (with old stamps and bookplates from Meadville Theological School); volume two is a fourth edition (bookplate of Anne and Clarence Kilburn). Both in contemporary calf, spine labels; volume two with front board detached. Engraved maps throughout. Complete in 2 volumes. 5th edition of Part I and 4th edition of Part II. Pp. 6, [2], [17]-864; [4], [9]-664. Six copperplate folding maps complete and intact. Frontis folding maps of the World and of Europe respectively in Vol I and II are moderately toned and foxed. Maps of Asia, Africa, North America and South America are generally quite bright and clean with only superficial toning. Uniformly bound in full calf, but bindings are rough. Prior owner chose to stabilize condition using an application of PVA over the spines. Cracking and partial separation of boards at joints. Boards generally decent though some scarring, worming and surface loss to lower board of Vol I. Some light worming and predation to rear matter of the 1st volume. Wants rebacking restoration which would result in rather nice set. Offered at this price for a short time pending our assignment of the work to our local professional for restoration. The first volume is deals with the Western Hemisphere, and the second to the Eastern Hemisphere and Australasia. The title-page states that the book is "accompanied by a General Atlas of the World, containing sixty-three maps by Arrowsmith and Lewis," but there is no atlas present, and Sabin makes no note of such an atlas.
