A very good copy.__________________________________________ Saint-Vallier was bishop of Québec from 1688-1727. He seems to have offended almost everyone in his diocese ,which stretched from Quebec to Louisiana and Mississippi (Nouvelle France). He led an interesting and eventful life , being once captured by the English Navy and even asked to resign by Louis XIV. This volume would have been bound / decorated not before 1685 and probably not after 1713. The Bishop was living a very austere life from 1713 onwards,_______________________________ ". In 1713 he had given up his palace to go to live at the Hôpital Général, of which he was the founder. His habits were worn; his apartment was but a single room, with whitewashed walls and furnishings amounting only to a bed, some pieces of furniture, a few shelves of books, (my italics) and some pious engravings. Gradually he even reached the point of selling the personal belongings he had brought from France, his linen, his shoes, his bed-covers, and his bed itself." (DCB). ___________________________________ Perhaps because of the Bishop's austere life style, books from his library seem to be extremely rare. This small 'pocket size' volume may well have accompanied the Bishop on his many travels in Quebec and Nouvelle France.____________________________________________________________* There is the possibility that this is an early North American binding. The leather and the tooling seem a little less refined than a French binder of theperiod would have done for a Bishop. An interesting item from an early North American Library.
