Pere de Vaux has collected and sifted and organized a tremendous amount of information about the society and institutions of ancient Israel. His work is vast in scope, covering every aspect of Israelite life in Old Testament times, yet microscopic in its attention to detail, and always evidencing the author's mastery of his material. The result is a full~scale and fascinatingly detailed reconstruction of ancient Israel, based on the latest results of all the sciences which contribute to our understanding of the Bible. The author brings to his study a rare competence as an archaeologist: he has spent half his life in Palestine, always active in field work. Here he marshals all the revelant evidence of Near Eastern archaeology, from Iraq to Egypt, to draw his picture and to elucidate the text of the Bible. He is generous also in allotting space to philological discussions, and the book will be of considerable interest and assistance to students of Semitic languages. But Pere de Vaux is writing primanly for readers who are not specialists in such fields, in order to give them a readable account of the society that was ancient Israel. And here the book finds its master theme: the entire life of Israel~ its attitude to the family, to the state, to the king, even to war ~ was decisively and consciously molded by those religious beliefs which made this people one nation. No modern book offers between two covers so much valuable and enlightening information about the social life of Israel, nor does Ancient Israel have any rival in competence and sureness of authorship. Pere de Vaux has an international and interfaith reputation as an archaeologist and biblical scholar. He is the director of the renowned Ecole Biblique in Jerusalem (Jordan), run by the Dominican order of which he is a distinguished member. He was the senior member of the editorial committee which carried through the recent new French translation of the entire Bible from Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic, known as the Bible de Jerusalem. Among his better known archaeological investigations are his. work as co~director of the excavations at Khirbet Qumran and Feshkha and his researches in the caves of the Dead Sea Scrolls in the period 1949~1958. ANCIENT ISRAEL contains a bibliography of 1,000 items, a general index with 3,000 entries, and a biblical index of 6,000 references. Buchnummer des Verkäufers 8011706
