Beschreibung
Anecdotes from the life of the Bishop of Landaff, written by himself and published by his son. Watson was educated at Cambridge, where his theological career began with his assumption of the post of Regius Professor of Divinity. Incidentally, his previous challenge for the position of Senior Wrangler led to the introduction of 'marking' individual answers to tests, instead of the previous system of 'judgement'. In 1774 he took up the prebendary of Trinity College. He became archdeacon of Ely in 1779, and in 1782 he became the Bishop of Llandaff, a post he held until his death in 1816. He was active in national political debate, refuting Thomas Paine's The Age of Reason with his work An Apology For The Bible. He also published An Address to the People of Great Britain, arguing for taxes to be raised to fund the war with France. It was his custom to keep written records of the most important events of his life, and those records are collected here, published by his son of the same name after his death. This is the second edition. It is an ex-library copy, and contains plates and stamps to that effect. It was also previously owned by Peter Laslett of Trinity College, Cambridge, whose bookplate can be found to the front pastedown of volume two. In half calf with gilt detailing to the spine. Externally sound, with some general shelfwear and the odd handling mark. The front hinges of both volumes are a little tender, but firm. There are institutional library stamps to the front pastedown of volume two. There is also a library plate, as well as a personal bookplate. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages of both volumes are somewhat cockled throughout. Institutional library stamps to the title page of both volumes, and occasionally throughout the textblock. There are moderate tide marks to the majority of pages in both volumes, though for the most part the text is unaffected. Both volumes are, however, generally free from spotting. Good.
