B01N5RWKI0 In Latin. 1551 Apud Hieronymum Schottum (Venice, Italy), 9 x 12 1/4 inches tall hardbound, later (but not recent) rebinding in speckled paper boards over vellum spine, large engraved printer's marks to title page and verso of final leaf, with smaller engraved caps and illustrations mixed through the text, leaves 60-65 mispaginated as 50-55, [4], 140 ff. Solidly bound. Lacks original blank endpapers (refreshed endpapers added when last rebound), but in all other respects a complete copy. Moderate soiling, rubbing and edgewear to covers, especially at tips. Prior owner names and other ink notations, including a couple which are subsequently lined out, to the title page. Slight edge chipping to the fore edge of the first few leaves of the volume. Red pencil marginal ticks and underlining to a few pages in the beginning of the volume. Scattered contemporary ink marginalia throughout. Worming to the lower margin of the first 28 leaves, reaching the last line of text about a dozen times. Faded stamp of the Libreria Feyles, Saluzzo (the Piedmont region of Italy) to rear pastedown. A handful of instances of light to moderate dampstaining mixed throughout, none interfering with text. Altogether a nice reading / reference copy of this scarce issue. OCLC (No. 24240028, 614800437) locates only five copies at institutions worldwide - at Saint Bonaventure University in Kentucky, Harvard, University of Cambridge, University of Aberdeen in Scotland and Universitatsbibliothek Erlangen-Nurnberg in Germany. ~AA~ A mid-sixteenth century Venetian edition of a commentary on and Latin translation of Aristotle by Roman senator, consul, magister officiorum, and philosopher of the early sixth century, Boethius (circa 480-524). Born four years after Odoacer deposed the last Roman Emperor and declared himself King of Italy, Boethius entered public service under Ostrogothic King Theodoric the Great, who imprisoned and executed him in 524 on charges of conspiracy to overthrow him. While jailed, Boethius composed his Consolation of Philosophy, a philosophical treatise on fortune, death and other issues, which became one of the most popular and influential works of the Middle Ages. This volume offered here - of Aristotelian commentary by Boethius - was part of his only partially realized ideal of bringing Plato and Aristotle to the Latin-speaking world. Among the included works (from the 'Index Librorum' on the verso of the title page): - In Porphyrium a Victorino translatum. - In Porphyrium a se latinum factum. - In praedicamenta Aristotelis. - In librum de interpretatione commentaria minora. - In eundem de interpretatione commentaria. - Introductio ad categoricos syllogismos. - De syllogismo categorico. - De syllogismo hypothetico. - De diuisione. -De definitione. - In Topica Ciceronis. - De differentiis Topicis. - Aduersus Eutychen & Nestorium.
