Beschreibung
This isn't the first edition. It was published in 1923. Based on the referenced books on the 'Books By Aldous Huxley' page this book was likely published between 1926 and 1927. What makes this listing an unusual one is the presence of the dust jacket. As far as I can see, there is only one other dust jacketed copy for sale anywhere on the Internet. That one is also not a first edition and is described as being in poor condition. It is selling for $200.00. The latest referenced Huxley title on the jacket was published in 1926. As you can see from the photos, the covers are quite clean. There's a very light spot under 'Aldous' on the front cover and a few other light spots near the bottom edge of the front cover. They're visible only at certain angles, the scan didn't pick them up. You can see that parts of the covers have an unusual inlaid, pebbly texture. And that the gilt lettering on the spine is still quite bright. The middle and bottom page edges are rough-cut. The corners and edges are in very good shape. The spine ends have light creasing. The spine is slightly slanted forward. There is a 1/4 inch tear at the gutter between the front inside cover and first blank end paper. A little webbing underneath can be seen. However the paper which lifted up a bit there is still present and can be glued back down over the tear. The binding of the front cover is not affected, is not at all loose. has no give. The rest of the gutter is perfectly fine. And the gutter between the rear inside cover and rear blank end paper is also perfect. The book is solidly bound. Between page 238 and page 239 there is a sliver of a space at the gutter and goes up about 2" from the bottom edge. Also, a number of the pages before and after this have a very light indentation going across the gutter about 1/2" on each facing page. I turned over every page in the book because I saw a few small stains on some pages. In doing so I saw 12 or so pages with a couple of small stains, all of them in the blank margins away from the print. There's also one page that has several fingerprints off of its outer edge. All of the other pages, (the book has 350) are perfectly clean. Page 313-314 has a 2" tear around its top corner not reaching the print. I didn't see any creasing or dogeared corners. No markings. No attachments. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in this book. You can see the dust jacket in the first three photos. The Good rating is mainly due to the loss off the top edge of the spine which removes the top half of 'Antic'. Otherwise this rare jacket is in very good condition. It's been protected by a fitted cover. There is some vague darkening on the front and rear cover. I'm not sure whether you would call it handling soiling because there really isn't any conspicuous soiling or staining. The spine is somewhat darkened, darker than the front and rear color. There are a few very tiny tears off the top edge of the rear cover, also a tiny loss at the top corner of the front middle edge. The flaps are in very good condition. There are a couple of very tiny tears off their top edges. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. '$2.50 net' is at the top corner of the front flap. The flaps are quite clean. The inside (not the visible outside) has four small strips of scotch tape on it. Totally unnecessary: it appears to cover tears no larger than 1/8th of an inch. I noticed it when I replaced the old protective cover with a new one. On the front cover of the jacket The Saturday Review of Literature is quoted: "There are passages in Antic Hay of a pure and rhythmic beauty, passages so fine, so just, that they move one like good music." And David Garnett adds "There is a laugh not only on every page but in almost every sentence." The front cover of the First Edition's dust jacket that you can see on Antic Hay's Wikipedia page is identical to mine. It's possible the rest the jacket is identical, but I don't know.
