Copperplate engraving on verge type hand laid paper with watermark. Original outline hand colouring. on paper. Size in cm: The overall size is ca. 63 x 46 cm. The image size is ca. 56 x 42.5 cm. Size in inch: The overall size is ca. 24.8 x 18.1 inch. The image size is ca. 22 x 16.7 inch.Map : 'Partie Occidentale du Temporel de l'Archeveschà  et Eslectorat de Mayence, et le Haut et Bas Comte de Catzenellenboge.'. (Map of the area around Mainz and Frankfurt, with the Rhine and Main rivers.) With two decorative titles and scale cartouches. This map is an original map after the Carthographer N. Sanson, published in Paris by H. Jaillot ca. 1674 as part of the 'Atlas Nouveau'.Artists and Engravers: Alexis-Hubert Jaillot (1632-1712), was a French cartographer. He joined the Sanson heirs and redrew Nicolas Sanson's maps on a larger scale. Nicholas Sanson (1600 - 1667) and his descendents were important French cartographer's active through the 17th century. Sanson started his career as a historian where, it is said, he turned to cartography as a way to illustrate his historical studies. In the course of his research some of his fine maps came to the attention of King Louis XIII who, admiring the quality of his work, appointed Sanson 'Geographe Ordinaire du Roi'. Sanson's duties in this coved position included advising the King on matters of Geography and compiling the royal cartographic archive. Sanson's corpus of some three hundred maps initiated the golden age of French Cartography.Condition: Excellent. general age related toning. some light staining from handling.
