The image size is ca. 20.3 x 24.8 inch.Antique map, titled: 'Carte Reduite de l'Archipel.' - Sea chart of the Agaean Sea, from Candia (Crete) and Rhodos in the lower edge to Athens and Thessaloniki and Constantinople (Istanbul) at top right. The Turkish side includes Smyrna (Izmir) and Ephese. Numerous islands of the Greek archipelago are indicated. From: L'Hydrographie Francoise Recueil des Cartes Generales et Particulieres qui ont ete Faites pour le Service des Vaisseaux du Roy. Par ordre des Ministres de la Marine depuis 1737. jusqu'en 1765. This map is dated 1738.Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Dheulland' after 'Jacques-Nicolas Bellin / Depot de la Marine'. Guillaume Dheulland (ca. 1700-1770) was a French mapmaker and engraver. Jacques-Nicolas Bellin (1703-1772) was a French hydrographer and geographer. He is considered the greatest 18 th. c. French hydrographer and for 50 years he was associated with the 'Depot des cartes et Plans' (Depot de la Marine) as the First hydrographer of the French Royal Navy. His maps were constantly updated with the latest information and their execution magnificent. Bellin's major works are the 'Neptune Francois .', the 'Petit Atlas Maritime .' and the 'Hydrographie Francoise .' As a member of a French intellectual group called the 'Philosophes' and he contributed 994 articles to the 'Encyclopedie' by Diderot/d'Alembert. He also contributed to the 'Histoire Generale des Voyages' by Prevost. Jean-Frederic Phelypeaux, Count of Maurepas (1701-1781) was a French statesman. He was 'Secretaire d'Etat de la Marine' from 1723-1749.Condition: Good, given age. Original middle fold, as issued. A wormhole in the middle fold, near the left edge of the image. Paper loss in the lower margin. Some small stains in the margins and one stain just below the middle fold in the center of the image. Soft creasing in the top edge of the image.
