Beschreibung
Newly bound. With bookplate (ex libris) of Jose Serrao. Half title has a bold undeciphered signature of a former owner, possibly Jose George Fernandez's. Incomplete work due to the author's death in August 1900, when he was already writing the conclusions of his study. Study and documentation about the life and in more detail about the trial brought by the inquisition against António Homem, a Jewish martyr, born in 1564 to new-Christian parents in Coimbra. Many of the Jewish converts continued secretly to practice their Jewish religion, and in order to escape the suspicions, traps and persecutions of the Inquisition, made their children adopt a clerical career. Anthony was educated for the Church. He joined a religious order and studied at the university in his hometown. On 22 February 1592 he graduated as a physician and 'magister' and, after having served the Church in various offices, was appointed deacon and professor of canon law at the University of Coimbra. He appeared before the court of the Inquisition on February 1, 1611, as the author of some theological works, being acquitted, but raising suspicions and being observed. In 1619 a secret synagogue was discovered in Lisbon, in which António Homem led the services and preached the Jewish faith. On 18 December 1619 he was brought to court and sentenced to death. Five years later, on May 5, 1624, he was burned alive in an Auto de Fé in Lisbon. His house was demolished and a pillar inscribed 'Præceptor infelix' was erected in its place.
