Beschreibung
The date 1870 is on the copyright page, no date on the title page. Early edition. You can see the covers in the photos. They are in pretty nice condition, mostly clean, some handling soiling on the rear cover. There is a little rubbing at the spine ends, covering a little bit of the gilt lettering over the publisher's name at the bottom one. The front bottom corner has a small spot of rub-through. There is a little light rubbing at the other corners. The spine has a slight forward lean. The book is pretty solidly bound. There is a small section of pages (seven) that sticks out a little bit at the middle edge. I checked these pages and they are decently bound, although there is a very thin space at the juncture of the first one and the page facing it. There are one or two other instances where there is a thin space at the juncture between facing pages. No pages are detached. The covers are nicely, tightly bound. The pages look pretty clean. I did see two pairs of facing pages with a number of tan spots on them. Also, the third page of the Contents pages has several light spots. There are likely a few other light spots over the remainder of the pages. There is a small loss at the outer edge of one page, far from the print. There is a thin crease on the title page, also a slight crease on a few early pages just below the top corner. A few pages have a tiny top corner crease in the section at the end of the book titled Valuable and Interesting Works for Public & Private Libraries Published by Harper & Brothers. The section has ten pages. There are some light bottom corner creases here and there as well. There is a tiny stamped name on the front end paper. There are no other markings in the book. There are no attachments of any kind. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. There are 33 illustrations, including the frontispiece. I checked to make sure that all are present. They are. They are also all in very good shape. 'A study of African wildlife, culture, and native tribes as they existed in the mid-1800s, written by the first European explorer to confirm the existence of gorillas and African pygmies. Following on from his 'Stories of the Gorilla Country', 'Wild Life Under the Equator', and 'Lost in the Jungle', adventurer Paul du Chaillu describes in vivid detail African life before the advent of European colonization, and the astonishing practices, culture, and environment which existed at that time. Made a king of a tribe after awing them with simple, everyday European items such as shoes, clothes, socks, hats, and guns, Du Chaillu relates how he tried to bring some sort of order into the chaotic and unpredictable tribal life of his subjects, to no avail. He then moves on to describe the lifestyle, culture, and physical appearance of neighboring tribes. During this process, he discusses African slavery, both by their own people and by the Arab slave traders.'. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 004852
