The ninth edition of this work on Christianity and Quakers. Robert Barclay (1648-1690) was a member of the Society of Friends and governer of East Jersey through most of the 1880's. He was a supporter of George Fox and friends with William Penn but also enjoyed favour at the Court of James II. This book, defending his faith was read widely. Barclay was an intelligent and knowledgeable theologian and this work became one of the more prominent Quaker texts. In a full calf binding. Externally, there is some wear to the extremities including scuffing, fraying, marks to the boards, bumping to the corners and it lacks titles. The binding of the text block is tight and firm, with the rear board attached by the cords although the spine has split, and the front board has detached completely. Internally the pages are generally clean and bright with the occasional brown spot or handling mark. With some minor binding work this volume could be a quite respectable copy. Good Only. Barclay wrote in a time when Friends were facing serious persecution and potential destruction. "Robert Barclay made Quaker thinking logically defensible when the movement was only about a quarter of a century old. Some think he saved it from extinction." Robert Barclay, Champion of Quaker Ideal Dan Graves. "The Apology remains the classic statement of Quaker principles." ODNB; Smith I, 182. "This early and enduring exposition of Quaker beliefs defined Quakerism as a religion of the 'inner light.' Arguing against both Roman Catholicism and traditional Protestantism, including Anglicanism, Barclay asserted that neither the church nor the Scriptures could claim completeness or ultimate authority and that both were secondary to the work of the Holy Spirit, "the Inner Light" in the believer."
