An Appeal to Caesar, Albion W. Tourgee, Fords, Howards & Hulbert, New York, 1884, 422 pp, full red cloth, 7 x 5.5 , 12mo. In good condition. Rippling from previous humidity exposure on front and rear boards along edges. Light wear overall to extremities with typical shelf wear. Green floral end papers clean and bright. Front gutter slightly tender. Minor toning throughout. remains bright and well-preserved. Free of known markings. Binding intact. Please see photos. Known as an ally to African Americans, Albion Tourgee (1838-1905) challenged segregation laws and litigated the landmark case of Plessy v. Ferguson in 1896. The court ruling deemed that separate but equal facilities were constitutional and enabled segregation for decades. Tourgee was an American solider, lawyer, writer, politician and diplomat.
