Fabrizio Serra, 2013, pp. 328 con figure in bianco/nero n.t. -- Ritual, in the past decades, has gained a central role in the study of religions and societies, and so has achieved the status of an independent and inter-/cross-disciplinary field of research. Ritual studies have proposed new and stimulating interpretative theories and approaches, which, however, only partially satisfy the needs of scholars working in the area of ancient civilizations. This is due to the fact that these theories are often derived from scientific disciplines, for example anthropology, which leave the historical dimension separate or limited to the recent past. Scholars of ancient civilizations are working from different perspectives, insofar as they have to draw on archaeological and written evidence from long-gone cultures. It was the aim of this conference: to stimulate a fruitful scientific exchange between young scholars from different disciplines working on rituals dealing with ancient cultures, such as Assyriology, Ancient Near Eastern Archaeology, Egyptology, or Classical Studies. All these fields can draw on diverse archaeological and written sources, and also research cultures that are characterized by a longue durée of centuries or even millennia. Both in chronological and geographical respects, the articles published in this volume cover a vast area: Ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, Syria, Israel, Anatolia, Greece and the Phoenicians in the Mediterranean area. Gli studi sui rituali, negli ultimi decenni, hanno acquisito un ruolo centrale nello studio delle religioni e delle società, e così hanno raggiunto lo status di un campo di ricerca indipendente e interdisciplinare. Queste ricerche hanno proposto teorie e approcci interpretativi nuovi e stimolanti, che tuttavia soddisfano solo in parte le esigenze degli studiosi che lavorano nel campo delle civiltà antiche. Ciò è dovuto al fatto che queste teorie sono spesso derivate da discipline scientifiche, quali l'antropologia, che lasciano la dimensione storica separata o limitata al recente passato. Gli studiosi di antiche civiltà lavorano da una prospettiva invece diversa, in quanto essi devono attingere testimonianze archeologiche e scritte da culture morte da tempo. Questo è stato l'obiettivo della conferenza: stimolare uno scambio scientifico fecondo tra giovani studiosi provenienti da varie discipline che lavorano sui rituali e che si occupano di culture antiche, come l'assiriologia, l'archeologia del Vicino Oriente, l'egittologia o gli studi classici. Tutti questi campi di studio possono attingere a diverse fonti archeologiche e scritte, e anche far ricerca su culture caratterizzate da una lunga durata, di secoli o addirittura di millenni. Da un punto di vista sia cronologico che geografico gli articoli pubblicati coprono una vasta area: Antico Egitto, Mesopotamia, Siria, Israele, Anatolia, Grecia e Fenici nel Mediterraneo.
