During 1956-58 Aramco's Chief Geologist Richard Allen Bramkamp (1910-58) and its future Chief Geologist and President Robert Wallace "Brock" Powers (1926-2010), defined for the first time the classification of Arabian carbonate rocks necessary to support Aramco's work. From this, they created a syllabus for its staff, which Exploration Manager Burt Beverly Jr described as "an outstanding work, a scientific milestone that will someday be a standard work", noting demand for it also from people outside of the Company (ref: Bramkamp's Aramco Expats obituary). This set relates to that seminal work, including Powers' own dissertation. (1) Bramkamp and Powers, "Classification of Arabian Carbonate Rocks - Short Notes", Bulletin of the Geological Society of America Vol 69, Oct 1958. Original printed buff wraps 16x25cm, pp1305-1317, complete with folding classification table. Fine. This was prepared to introduce the new Classification to a wider audience, and was one of Bramkamp's last works before his untimely death in the same year. // (2) Powers "Arabian Upper Jurassic Carbonate Reservoir Rocks", Reprinted from Classification of Carbonate Rocks - A Symposium, Memoir No. 1, American Association of Petroleum Geologists, 1962. Original yellow printed wraps 18x24cm, pp(1), 122-192 including several b/w maps, sections, drawings and photos. Very good, lightly creased. Powers was named Aramco's Chief Geologist in 1961 after completing his PhD in Geology at Yale. This paper was the dissertation he presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School at Yale, and he contributed it to the Symposium arranged by the Research Committee of the American Association in Denver in April 1961. In it, he credits Bramkamp, who had suggested the study, initiated preparation of various sections, and established many of the basic principles that Powers built on (p122). // (3) Three original b/w photos of Powers, each @18-20x24cm, two of them formal portraits, and the other showing him in conversation: Studio of the New York Times, Portrait taken Mar 24 1970; UNWRA 1974; nd c1970s. Very good with ink stamp to the verso of two. These date around the time Powers became President of the Trans-Arabian Pipeline Company (Tapline) in 1971, and Aramco in 1973.
