Very good condition blue cloth boards with gold front cover lettering and gold spine lettering. Includes Preliminary Page List of Books by Erich Maria Remarque. Translated from the German by Walter Sorell and Denver Lindley. A former owner vintage cartoon bookplate with the owner's neatly scripted signature on the appropriate blank bookplate line, is affixed to the center of the inner front board. Although this is a very early printing of this classic it is not a first edition since there is no numerical identification at the bottom of the last page, that is, prior to the 1980s the identification "(1)" in parenthesis at the end of the last page indicates a first printing from this publisher, D. Appleton-Century Company. All pages are in fine condition and the binding is exceedingly tight and square. "Arch of Triumph is a 1945 novel about stateless refugees in Paris before World War II. Written during his exile in the United States (1939-1948), it was his second worldwide bestseller after All Quiet on the Western Front. It was made into a feature film in 1948 and remade as a television film in 1984. Set in 1939, and. despite having no permission to perform surger, Ravic, a very accomplished German surgeon and a statelss refugee living in Paris, has been ghost-operating on patients for two years on the behalf of two less skillful French physicians. Unwilling to return to Nazi Germany, which has striped him of his citizenship, and unable to legally exist anywhere else in pre-war western Europ, Ravic manages to hang on. He is one of many displaced persons without passports or any other documents, who live under a constant threat of being captured and deported from one country to the next, and back again.
