A small archive of photographs, essays, and ephemera compiled by a military aviator, John H. Larned, between 1919 and 1931. All items are very good or better with some edgewear and tiny tears. John Larned served with the Air Corps Reserves as a "Captain, Aviation Section, Signal" during World War I, appointed February 20th, 1919. From there he spent the next few decades as a career military officer. Throughout the archive are certificates as he rose through the ranks from captain, to major, and finally lieutenant colonel in the 1930s. Additionally included are photographs of Larned in uniform, a certificate from the Military Order of Foreign Wars in Pennsylvania dated March 1919 that recognizes his involvement, albeit brief, in a foreign conflict. He continued with variations of the Air Corps, taking training classes and serving at domestic air fields throughout the 1920s. Included here is a long essay prepared by Larned researching "Aerial Weapons in the War up to the Time of their Establishment as a Separate Branch." Articles on military aviation written by Larned were featured in military publications during this time. His final assignment was to attend the "Command and General Staff School Course, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, from March 16, 1931, to June 15, 1931." He writes six letters to his wife Sarah during this time discussing his schooling. However, shortly after arriving in Kansas Larned died "suddenly," according to his obituary. "The sudden death of Luit-Colonel John Hawley Larned at Leavenworth, Kansas, recently, removes from the ranks of the Air Corps Reserve one of its most efficient and enthusiastic members." Larned was buried in Arlington Cemetery and photographs of his grave and a map of his plot, are present here, as sent to his widow. An interesting collection following the military career of a decorated Air Corps officer. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 445290
