Archive of British Vaudeville Entertainer Josie Heather circa 1912-1940 About 4.5 inches of scrapbook material including newspaper clippings, sheet music, typed and handwritten lyrics and notes. Scrapbook Good only; covers and many pages detached, most items sleeved and laid in. Contents generally Very Good with some edgewear, light soiling and a few small stains. This is a fantastic group of materials documenting the career of British vaudeville comedienne Josie Heather. It includes personal papers and a scrapbook she compiled which included her handwritten song lyrics and notes for comedic bits. There are dozens of clippings on the Glasgow native, who performed with her sister Bobbie on the Orpheum Circuit in the United States in 1923 and 1924. One, which identified Heather as the "leading attraction" at B.F. Keith's National Theatre, commented on the "bright songs and the merry chatter of the English girl. Her songs are new to Louisville audiences and are mostly war melodies, while her chatter is unusual and highly diverting." She was also known for her "fine display of gowns" and costume changes. She appeared on Broadway as Lily Dale in "Miss Gulliver's Travels" in 1931. The materials on offer here include sheet music, letters to Josie (including a fan letter as late as 1940), and an original manuscript for a song written for her by J. Keirn Brennan. Brennan (1873-1948) was a notable songwriter, Broadway lyricist and charter member of ASCAP, best known for co-writing the 1929 film "The Show of Shows." There is a 1925 issue of the Hippodrome Magazine with a full page photo of Heather for her upcoming performance, as well as manuscript receipts for rights to songs and artist's copies of musical pieces. Numerous song lyrics can be found on letterheads for important entities such as the Joe Morris Music Company. A few endearing items include her holograph notes for bits like "Nervous Girl" and her handwritten transcription of a Portland Telegram review of her act. One photograph of Heather was found in a collection at the University of Washington, and OCLC revealed that Warner Bros. made a silent film of the comedienne in 1929, though no holdings were listed. A rare and personal glimpse into the life and career of a vaudeville entertainer. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 508
