Small archive of 54 envelopes addressed to Arlene Jackson a Canadian vocalist and lyricist and songwriter who transplanted to Southern California. Envelopes date from the early 1940's to the late 1950's. Consists of letters from agents, song contracts, six copyright cards from the Library of Congress and 38 sealed envelopes of what appear (based on notes on envelopes) to be original manuscripts of Arlene Jackson tunes/lyrics. Correspondence includes letters from Ben Lipset, Stanley Boynton, Cass Stevens, Abner Silver, George Simon and Larry Clinton, mostly concerning music rights. Several letters discuss Jackson's lyrics for Larry Clinton's tune "Study in Brown". Jimmy Hilliard the recording chief at Decca Records states, ".no mention should be made of Lenox Avenue, Brown Skin Babies or anything that might possibly rub the ultra-sensitive colored person the wrong way." Jackson replied that she didn't feel the lyrics were offensive but she would try to re-write them anyway. Jackson wrote lyrics and music for hundreds of tunes including "It's Sunday Down in Caroline", Just For the Fun of It", "Palm Springs", "You Go To My Head", and many others.
