An archive of nine typed letters, signed by Nye to western and historical fiction writer and editor Richard S. Wheeler, dated from June 19, 1986 to June 19, 1987. Four of the letters are on full-size, tan letterhead, and five are on half-sheet, white letterhead (one of which is for Nye's "Old Prospector Rocks, Collector's Item Turquoise" business. All contain Nye's Bluebell Rd., Tucson address. The letters discuss the writing of, and process of finding publishers for several manuscripts of Nye's including Bonnet Strings, The Outside Man, Horse Thieves, The Man from Wells Fargo, The Lost Padre, Long Run, Heir to Bullybueno, The Fight at Four Corners, Mule Man, and Western Trails. They also include details about Nye's writing method: "My habit, without drafts, is to hit on a good title with no plot in mind and start typing finished copy"; information for Wheeler about the use of Sharps rifles; ranch property he once owned; and the life of a writer, "I would never advise anyone to be a writer. A damn lonely job! And more often than not an exasperating one." The letters, addressed to Wheeler as editor of Walker & Company, are in near fine condition, with very light creasing to some of the corners and a one paragraph marked with a green pen, (presumably by either Nye or Wheeler). The full-size sheets had been folded in half.Nye, a co-founder and past president of the Western Writers of America, published well over 100 books of western fiction and non-fiction books about quarter horses. Wheeler was a six-time winner of the Spur Award and the Owen Wister Award for lifetime achievement in the field of western literature.
